Meta Will Use Public Posts to Train AI Models

In its recent statement, Meta said it would use public posts, open new tabs, including photos, captions and comments to train its generative artificial intelligence models.

“Training content will not include private messages or information from accounts of users under the age of 18,” Meta said, as quoted from ReutersTuesday (17/9).

The update follows Meta’s decision in mid-June to pause the rollout of its AI models in Europe after Ireland’s privacy regulator asked the company to delay its plans to leverage data from social media posts.

The company later said the delay would also allow it to comply with requests from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

“Since we paused the training of our generative AI models in the UK in response to feedback from regulators, we have engaged positively with the ICO. This clarity and certainty will help us bring AI to Meta products in the UK more quickly,” Meta said.

“Facebook and Instagram users in the UK will start receiving in-app notifications from next week explaining the company’s procedures and how users can opt out of having their data used for training,” he added.

Meanwhile the ICO said Meta had made changes to its approach since dropping the plans in June.

“Meta has simplified the way users can object to the processing of their data and has extended the window in which they can do so,” the ICO added.rmol news logo article
