Not Only Pope Francis, Patriarch Kirill Also Says AI Development Is Terrifying
Speaking at the forum ‘21st Century Culture: Sovereignty or Globalism?’ in St. Petersburg on Wednesday (11/9), he expressed concerns that technology has eroded human faith.
“If humanity loses religious faith, especially in the context of technological growth associated with the emergence of artificial intelligence, then we are truly entering the era of the Apocalypse,” the Patriarch said, as quoted by RTThursday (12/9).
“The development of humanity is possible only with the growth of faith and morality in people,” Kirill stressed, warning that otherwise there would be dire consequences given the rise of technology.
“We are approaching an apocalyptic period, this is what we all need to understand clearly,” he stressed.
And, says Kirill, the only way out of this possible crisis is faith in God.
“If we abandon faith in God, nothing will work,” he said.
The patriarch also warned that AI could pose a real danger to the existence of humanity.
“Of course, there are dystopian horror stories, where artificial intelligence takes over all of humanity,” he said.
However, he continued to emphasize that everything related to artificial intelligence is not yet fully understood and realized.
The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has also warned about the potential dangers of rapid AI development. He told a G7 summit in Italy in July that AI was an exciting and frightening tool that needed close human oversight.
Earlier in 2023, a group of industry leaders, including those from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic and others, also warned that the technology they were developing could one day pose an existential threat to humanity and could be as deadly as pandemics and nuclear weapons.
