Meta Blocks Russian Media from All Its Platforms

In its statement on Monday (16/9), Meta claimed that the media outlets had used deceptive tactics to carry out covert influence operations online.
“After careful consideration, we are expanding our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media,” the social media company said in a written statement, as quoted by ReutersTuesday (17/9).
“Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally due to foreign interference activities,” he continued.
The company said the ban would be implemented in the coming days. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads are among Meta’s apps.
The ban marks a sharp escalation in action by the world’s largest social media companies against Russian state media, after years of taking more limited steps such as blocking the outlets from running ads and reducing the reach of their posts.
In briefing materials shared with Reuters, Meta said it had seen Russian state-controlled media trying to evade detection in their online activity in the past and expected them to continue trying to engage in deceptive practices in the future.
