Alibaba Cloud Launches Qwen 2.5 AI Model

Speaking at the Apsara 2024 Conference this week, Eddie Wu, chief executive of Alibaba’s cloud unit, said AI has evolved faster in the past 22 months than at any other time in history.

“We are still in the early stages of artificial general intelligence (AGI) transformation,” Wu said while launching 100 multimodal models of Qwen 2.5, as quoted from TechnodeSaturday (21/9).

According to the company’s introduction, Qwen 2.5 is the latest generation of Alibaba’s open-source large language model, which includes seven versions ranging from 500 million to 72 billion parameters, with an overall performance improvement of more than 18 percent compared to its predecessor.

The Qwen 2.5 release will feature over 100 models created as open source.

This broad range includes basic models, instructional models, and quantified models, with varying degrees of precision and methods, covering a variety of modalities such as language, audio, and vision, as well as specialized codes and mathematical models.

“Today marks an important milestone as we launch our most extensive open-source initiative to date,” said Jingren Zhou, Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.

“This initiative was created to empower developers and companies of all sizes, enhance their ability to leverage AI technology and further stimulate the growth of the open-source community,” Jingren said.

He added that he will remain committed to investing in advanced AI infrastructure to drive widespread adoption of generative AI technology across industries.
