President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) visited SpaceX in Boca Chica, Texas, United States (US) on Saturday (14/5) morning who was greeted directly by CEO/Chief Engineer Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
Jokowi arrived at the Stargate SpaceX building at around 10.30 local time. The president and Elon Musk met before touring SpaceX’s rocket production facility.
The President said his visit to SpaceX was a follow-up to an order he had given to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to talk with Elon about investment, technology and innovation.
“Now I am here and meet directly with Elon to discuss future cooperation,” said the President in a press release delivered by the Presidential Secretariat.
During the meeting, Elon Musk said he was very interested in the future of Indonesia which he said “has great potential.” Musk added that Tesla and SpaceX would explore several other collaborations with Indonesia.
“We will see closely the form of cooperation in many ways, because Indonesia has a lot of potential. Moreover, Indonesia has a large population and continues to grow. This is good because we need a lot of people in the future,” added Elon Musk.
November, Elon Plans to Visit Indonesia
Responding to Jokowi’s invitation to come directly to Indonesia, Elon Musk said he hoped to come in November.
“I think he is very interested in coming to Indonesia immediately and I have told him to come to Indonesia,” said President Jokowi.
Elon Musk said he planned to come in November this year.
“Hopefully (coming) in November. Thank you for the invitation,” concluded Elon Musk.
Indonesia welcomes Musk’s interest
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan in an interview with VOA At the end of April, Elon Musk had also expressed his interest in collaborating with Indonesia.
“I think it will be equally profitable, America will benefit, Indonesia will also benefit from this investment. I also conveyed my meeting with Elon Musk to Gina Raimondo (Minister of Commerce AS.red) and Janet Yellen (Minister of Finance AS.red) when they met at the forum (World Bank Annual Meeting.ed),” said Luhut after making a preliminary visit to SpaceX.
“I said this investment is a good program because it makes balance (balance). right America also said that strategic mineral resources should not only be managed by one party. So, now we include America,” said Luhut.
Luhut further explained that Indonesia offered cooperation in the manufacture of electric cars from upstream to downstream (end-to-end) because Indonesia has green energy potential.
For example, said Luhut, if Tesla wants to make five million electric cars, Indonesia offers one million of which are made in Indonesia, from cars to batteries.
Luhut added that 500 thousand cars could be made in North Kalimantan and another 500 thousand in Batang, Central Java.
“If I look at Elon’s seriousness, I guess most likely (most likely.red) all of this will happen, but it’s called a business, we’ll see first. What I like, he (Elon Musk.red) is very open. I also congratulate him on his Twitter. I feel he is a eccentricbut at the same time humble (humble). He is simple,” said Luhut.
Previously, the iPhone assembly company from Taiwan, Foxconn, in early January also signed a memorandum of understanding on an investment agreement to build an electric car battery component factory in the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate, Central Java.
A similar interest was also shown by an investor from South Korea, LG. According to the Investment Minister/Head of the BKPM Investment Coordinating Board, Bahlil Lahadalia, LG is ready to carry out groundbreaking or laying the groundwork for the construction of a cathode precursor plant in May or June in the same area.
