Kalush Orchestraoriginal band Ukraine, won first place in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, on Sunday (15/5) local time. They performed an original song titled Stefania in the competition.
The band defeated 24 other competitors in the final round. They received 439 fan votes and the highest number of points Eurovision has ever received.
“Thank you for supporting us. This victory goes to all the Ukrainian people,” said Oleg Psiuk, vocalist of the Kalush Orchestra, when accepting the award as reported by DeadlineSunday (14/5).
The song Stefania, which was performed by the Kalush Orchestra in the competition, was written by Oleg Psiuk, the band’s vocalist. He wrote the song originally as a tribute to his mother.
However, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine broke out on February 24, Stefania has become the national anthem in the midst of the war.

When interviewed by reporters, Psuik said that they wanted to show that Ukrainian culture is still alive despite the war.
“We are here to show that Ukrainian culture and music are still alive, and that they have their own distinct and very special nature,” Psuik said.
In addition, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not forget to congratulate the Kalush Orchestra on the victory. He also welcomed their victory in the Eurovision Song Contest competition.
“I believe the key to our victory in the battle with the enemy is not far away,” Zelensky said via Telegram Associated Press.
In addition, Zelensky stated that he is ready and will do his best to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year which is planned to be held in the city of Mariupol.
