Dr. Anthony Fauci has delivered an optimistic assessment of the current coronavirus situation in the United States, in which he said America was “out of the pandemic phase” – in the context of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths – and appeared to be transitioning towards COVID-19. as an endemic disease, which rolls regularly in certain areas.
In the program PBS “NewsHour” on Tuesday (26/4), the leading infectious disease expert said the coronavirus remains a pandemic for much of the world. The threat to America is not over, he said, adding that he was talking about the worst phase of the pandemic.
“There are no longer 900,000 new infections per day, tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. We are at a low level at the moment,” he said.
However, Fauci clarified his statement through the newspapers Washington Post on Wednesday (27/4), saying (what’s happening now) is not like a “rapidly up and down phase of the pandemic” when a wave of omicron variants strikes in the brutal winter and he explained (at the event PBS the) what appears to be a transition period for the coronavirus to become an endemic disease.
“The world is still in a pandemic. There’s no doubt about that. Don’t misinterpret it. We are still experiencing a pandemic,” he said Washington Post.
Fauci’s remarks come as health authorities grapple with keeping COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations stable, and learning to live with a virus that is still mutating and unpredictable.
More Tools to Overcome COVID-19
President Joe Biden’s administration has stressed that it now has more tools – vaccinations, booster injections and drugs – to better tackle the spread of the virus than ever before.
In recent months, cases in the US have fallen dramatically compared to the number of cases previously recorded. But health officials are keeping a close eye on this phenomenon as highly contagious variants are still prevalent.
The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said this past week new cases had increased by about 25 percent.
Meanwhile, according to the Corona Virus Management Resource Center at Johns Hopkins, the United States has recorded more than 81 million cases and 992,000 deaths since the pandemic began in March 2020. [em/lt]
