Singapore execute a man Malaysia people with mental disabilities, Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, today, Wednesday (27/4), even though they have drawn international criticism since last year.
Nagaenthran’s brother, Navin Kumar, said that he had received reports of the executions today.
According to him, Nagaenthran’s body will be sent to Malaysia. The family will then hold a funeral for Nagaenthran in Ipoh City.
Nagaenthran was eventually executed after a court rejected an appeal submitted in a trial on Tuesday (26/4).
At the end of the trial, Nagaenthran and his family could only cry. While crying, Nagaenthran can be heard calling his mother, “Ma.”
Nagaenthran should have been hanged in November 2021. However, the execution process was postponed because the Singapore High Court considered the convict’s appeal.
The appeal was filed after human rights groups urged Singapore to overturn the sentence because the 33-year-old has a mental disability.
Referring to information from a group against the death penalty, Nagaenthran’s IQ is only 69, which is included in the level of intellectual disability based on international standards.
He was also declared acutely hyperactive and addicted to alcohol. All of these problems are said to have an impact on the way Nagaenthran makes decisions and controls his emotions.
Nagaenthran himself was arrested in April 2009, when he was 21 years old. At that time, he was arrested for trying to smuggle nearly 43 grams of heroin into Singapore. The heroin was strapped to his left thigh.
A Singapore court sentenced him to death in November 2010. After that, Nagaenthran’s team continued to take various legal steps to reduce his sentence, but to no avail.
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Saifuddin Abdullah, has also written a letter to the Singaporean foreign minister regarding the case. He also sought consular assistance for Nagaenthran and his family.
However, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs defended the court’s decision. According to them, Nagaenthran was well aware of the crimes he was accused of and could no longer escape punishment.
