“Since May 16, 2,439 regiments of Azovstal and Ukrainian troops have surrendered. Today May 20, the last group of 531 militiamen also surrendered,” said spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov.
He said the troop leadership in Azovstal had surrendered and was taken out of the steel factory area. He was brought under special escort.
Konashenkov also said that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had informed President Vladimir Putin of the successful invasion of the Azovstal and Mariupol regions.
Earlier, the Ukrainian military had ordered soldiers at the Azovstal steel plant, Mariupol, to stop fighting Russian troops on Friday (20/5).
The order to stop the attack was issued after about 1,000 Ukrainian troops at the steel factory reportedly surrendered amid a massive onslaught of Russian troops.
“Higher military commands have given orders to save the lives of our garrison soldiers and to stop defending the city,” Denys Prokopenko, the leader of the battalion unit trapped in Azovstal, said in a video statement on Telegram.
The Azovstal steelworks is one of the hottest battlefields in Mariupol as it is considered the last stronghold of Ukrainian troops in the city.
