Indonesia condemns the killing of Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, while covering clashes in the West Bank. RI also urges that Israel immediately stop the occupation of Palestine.
“Indonesia strongly condemns the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank region on Wednesday (11/05) which has violated international norms and laws,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called for a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into Abu Akleh’s death. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims.
At the end of his statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote, “Indonesia calls for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the implementation of a two-state solution.”
Abu Akleh himself was killed while covering clashes between Israeli officers and Palestinians in Jenin City, West Bank, on Wednesday (11/5).
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli soldiers. In its reporting, Al Jazeera also referred to the statement from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
However, Al Jazeera stated that until now it did not know the cause of Abu Akleh’s death.
“What we know now is that the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced his death,” Nida Ibrahim, an Al Jazeera journalist in Ramallah, was quoted as saying. Reuters.
Ibrahim said that the information that is known for sure so far is that Abu Akleh was shot in the head. Abu Akleh was then rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved.
On the other hand, the Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, stated that there was a possibility that Abu Akleh was killed by Palestinian gunfire.
This incident attracted the attention of many parties, including the United States. Washington states that Abu Akleh is a Palestinian-US citizen. They also urged a thorough investigation.
