President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said he just wanted to meet the President Vladimir Putin to end the Russian invasion of his country.
According to Zelensky, Putin is the only Russian official he wants to meet right now because it is the president who can stop the invasion.
“I cannot accept any meeting with anyone coming from the Russian Federation other than with the president [Vladimir Putin]. That was when the point of the meeting was about stopping the war. Apart from that, there is no other reason to have a meeting,” Zelenskiy said while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos virtually on Monday (23/5).
“President of the Russian Federation [Putin] that decides everything. If we talk about ending this war without him [Putin] personally, that decision cannot be taken,” he added.
Russia and Ukraine have held sporadic talks since Moscow launched its invasion on February 24. However, the series of dialogues did not produce tangible results, especially regarding the termination of the invasion until finally both sides decided to stop the negotiations.
Even so, Zelensky insisted it was impossible to stop the war without involving some kind of diplomacy.
In his address to the audience in Davos, Zelensky also said the war was going on with the consequences of enormous human casualties for Ukraine.
Ukrainian troops, he said, made gains, especially near the second city of Kharkiv, but “the bloodiest situation remains in the Donbas, where we are losing too many people”.
Russia is still attacking Ukraine, especially the eastern region of the former Soviet Union in the third month of the Moscow invasion.
Despite the rain of sanctions and international boycotts, Russia has continued to launch its attacks on Ukraine.
Russia even claimed a major victory in Mariupol, after taking control of the Azovstal steel factory which became the last stronghold of Ukrainian troops in the port city, Friday (20/5).
It marked the end of weeks of Russian attacks on Mariupol, especially the Azovstal steelworks.
