Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) open related sound British Embassy in Indonesia that raises and uploads photos of the rainbow flag, symbols of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT) on their official Instagram page. This action is considered to have created a polemic in Indonesian society.
“This action, along with publishing it through the British Embassy’s official social media account (Instagram @ukinindonesia), is very insensitive and creates a polemic among Indonesian people,” said the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teuku Faizasyah to CNNIndonesia.comSaturday (21/5).
Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds foreign representatives to maintain and respect the sensitivity of cultural values, religions and beliefs prevailing in Indonesia.
Previously, Indonesian netizens flooded the comments column for uploading photos of the British Embassy to Indonesia on the official Instagram account. The photo upload shows a rainbow flag symbolizing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) flying in the courtyard of the British Embassy in the Kuningan area, Jakarta.
The British Embassy uploaded the flag hoisting as a form of commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) which fell on 17 May.
The LGBT symbol flag is known to have flown in the front yard area of the British Embassy complex since Monday (17/5).
“Sometimes it’s important to take a stand against what we think is right, even if disagreements between friends can make this uncomfortable…The UK will stand up for LGBT+ rights and support those who stand up for them. We want to live in a world free of all type of discrimination,” reads the caption written by the British Embassy in the upload.
As a result of the installation of the rainbow flag, a number of netizens were busy commenting on the British Embassy’s upload. Most of them criticized the British embassy’s actions.
