Presidential candidate French, Marie Le Pen agreed with the prohibition of the hijab in public spaces. This statement immediately made Emmanuel Macron angry, during a debate broadcast on national television TF1 on Wednesday (20/4).
President Emmanuel Macron has warned that civil war could break out if his rival in the 2022 French presidential election, Marine Le Pen, wins and imposes a ban on wearing the hijab in public.
“You will cause civil war, Mrs. Le Pen. How many police will have to chase women when the hijab ban is implemented? I question this sincerely,” Macron said during the French presidential debate broadcast on national television on Wednesday (20/4).
Macron’s remarks came to attack Le Pen’s promises during the campaign. The far-right politician has vowed to impose a ban on wearing the hijab in public if he defeats Macron in the second round of the presidential election on April 24.
In the debate, Le Pen even reiterated his controversial intentions.
“I want to ban the veil in public spaces. I think the hijab is the uniform worn by radical Muslims,” said Le Pen defending the plan.
