A group of Democrats in Congress is calling for an end to the Senate filibuster as the fight to protect abortion rights is gaining momentum in the United States.
A vote on a bill by Senate Democrats to defend abortion rights nationwide will not be achieved if the Democrats are unable to produce the votes needed to bypass procedural hurdles.
President Joe Biden has asked the Democrats to enshrine the nearly 50-year-old Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade became law after leaks emerged from a draft opinion that would have overturned a landmark decree declaring a constitutional right to abortion services.
But passing the bill was easier said than done in a thinly divided Congress – reflecting a deeply divided country.
A test vote Wednesday in the Senate for a bill proposed by Democrats to protect access to abortion is expected to fail, as it was blocked by Republican-led filibusters. [lt/my]
