A man attacks a comedian Dave Chappelle on stage as she performs stand-up at an event in Los Angeles. The man was arrested by the police and charged with assault.
Reported AFPWednesday (4/5), the man suddenly stepped onto the stage and dropped Chappelle who was finishing his performance at the comedy festival ‘Netflix is A Joke’.
Police revealed the attacker was carrying an imitation weapon that functions like a knife. Chappelle is said to be unharmed in this incident.
Chappelle has recently received a lot of protests for his jokes about transphobia or discrimination against transgender people. However, the motive for the attack is not yet known.
The attack on the comedian comes weeks after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the live Oscars.
Rock, who also appeared in the same event, was on stage with Chappelle after the attack. The two of them tried to lighten the situation while joking.
According to Brandon Brown, a Los Angeles film worker who was at the scene, the assailant brought down Chappelle but Chappelle fought back. After that the attackers ran and then about 15 people immediately got on the stage.
Chappelle, Brown said, had tried to convince people this incident was not part of the event.
The attacker was identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee. He was charged with felony assault using a lethal weapon, LAPD spokeswoman Lizeth Lomeli said.
Police said they were still investigating the motive for the attack.
