China on Friday criticized Canada for blocking Chinese telecommunications giants Huawei and ZTE from Canada’s 5G network. China has described the ban as “baseless” and based on artificial security risk considerations.
Canada’s long-awaited move follows the United States and other key allies, and comes amid a diplomatic row between Canada and China over the detention of a senior Huawei executive on an American warrant, which has now been finalised.
“China resolutely opposes this blockade,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters. He added Beijing would “take all necessary measures” to protect Chinese companies.
Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne made the announcement Thursday, citing “the intention to prohibit the inclusion of Huawei and ZTE products and services in Canada’s telecommunications systems.”
The United States has warned of the security implications if Chinese technology companies are given access to telecommunications infrastructure that could be used for state espionage.
Huawei and Beijing have rejected the accusations. China warns of repercussions for countries that impose restrictions on telecommunications equipment providers. Wang Friday accused the Canadian government of “severely undermining the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.” [ka/ab]
