Military China annoyed after the warship United States of America USS Sampson sails the Straits Taiwan. Such missions are seen as undermining peace and stability.
The People’s Liberation Army Eastern Fleet Command said its troops were monitoring and alerting the ship.
“The United States has often carried out such provocative actions, sent the wrong signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ forces, and deliberately undermined the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. We firmly oppose it,” the Chinese military said in a statement Wednesday (27/4). Reuters.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said the US ship was sailing north through the strait, and the situation on the waterway was normal.
Similarly, spokesman for the US 7th Fleet, Nicholas Lingo, said the US military flies, sails and operates in any area as long as it does not violate international law.
“The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Lingo said in a statement.
US ships are also reported to have routinely transited the Taiwan Strait.
Washington often makes such voyages once a month, a move that infuriates China.
China’s anger was caused because the ship’s voyage could be a form of support for Taiwan.
The US and China are often at loggerheads over various matters. Starting from technology issues, human rights, to regional issues such as Taiwan or the South China Sea.
Regarding Taiwan, the US does not have formal diplomatic relations with this island. However, Washington is Taiwan’s most important international backer and arms supplier.
Taiwan insists on independence, while China considers Taipei part of its territory.
