Astrid’s story in Crazy Rich Asians played by Gemma Chan will be a spin-off film alias.
Reported Deadline On Friday (6/5), writer Jason Kim will write a script centered on Astrid and her boyfriend, Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr in the original film.
The project is said to be approved by Warner Bros. and is currently in the early development stage, apart from a sequel project written by Amy Wang is still in development.
These two Crazy Rich Asians projects are said to still refer to the second book of Kevin Wang’s trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend (2015).
The book not only tells the story of Rachel (Constance Wu) and Nick (Henry Golding), but also the love story of Astrid and Charlie.
Astrid is Nick Young’s cousin and in the book version, Charlie Wu is her first love. They were previously engaged, but Astrid’s parents did not agree because they saw Charlie unfit to be their daughter’s husband,
In the film version directed by Jon M Chu, Astrid learns that her husband, Michael (Pierre Png) has a mistress.
Astrid then reconnects with Charlie after they met at Nick and Rachel’s engagement party.
Meanwhile, the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians will still star the first film cast, namely Henry Golding and Constance Wu.
However, plot details are still kept under wraps. The production team has also not confirmed whether Singapore will be the setting for the sequel or not.
However, Golding mentioned the Crazy Rich Asians sequel earlier this month.
“I always tease Director Chu about it and tell him the same thing over and over, ‘They’re finding out about the (sequel) writing,'” Golding said.
“I know they are working on it but I wish it could be sooner,” he said.
