Alina Kabaevaa woman who has a romantic relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, is included in the draft proposal for the European Union’s 6th sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
CNN reported that this information was obtained from two European diplomatic sources. However, the European Union has so far not signed the draft.
The source also explained that the names in the draft proposal could be removed or added at the discretion of member countries. The names will be the points of negotiation if there are new sanctions proposals.
“Discussions are ongoing. This is not an easy thing, but we need to wait and monitor,” said one source.
CNN have contacted Russia’s National Media Group, headed by Kabaeva, but there has been no response.
Kabaeva was born in 1983 and is known to be linked to Putin more than 10 years ago. She is a gymnast who won various national medals, European competitions and the Olympics.
Kabaeva won the gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
The European Union’s latest draft sanctions proposal, which includes sanctions on oil imports from Russia, was submitted on Wednesday (6/5). Later the proposal must be approved by a majority of the 27 EU member states in order to be implemented.
Hungary, Slovakia and other eastern European countries have so far rejected the proposal and want to delay blocking oil imports.
AFP explained that if approved Kabaeva will be subject to sanctions are not allowed to visit EU countries and their assets frozen.
The proposal identifies Kabaeva as chairwoman of the National Media Group’s board of directors. The company holds significant stakes in almost all major Russian media.
Kabaeva and Putin’s romance was first reported in 2008, but Putin denies it.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, according to US officials, Kabaeva and her family have made personal fortunes because of their connections to Putin’s circle.
US intelligence classifies Kabaeva as the recipient of Putin’s fortune.
