ASEAN Member States – ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is a geo-political and economic organization founded by countries in the Southeast Asia region on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok (Thailand) to increase economic growth, developing the culture of its member countries, maintain stability and peace and provide opportunities for its members to discuss differences peacefully. At the beginning of the formation of ASEAN, the number of ASEAN members was five countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. The five countries are also the founders of ASEAN. In Indonesia, ASEAN is also known as PERBARA or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
On January 7, 1984, Brunei Darussalam became the 6th Member of ASEAN. Other Southeast Asian countries also joined ASEAN members, such as Vietnam (joined on July 28, 1995), Laos and Myanmar (joined on July 23, 1997). Then on December 16, 1998, Cambodia also joined the ASEAN Organization.
